Island City Trailer launch with Ruchika Oberoi and cast
The trailer of National Film Development Corporation’s award-winning next, Island City slated for a Pan-India Release on September 2, was launched on Wednesday at a suburban theatre.
The cast of the film including Vinay Pathak, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Amruta Subhash, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Samir Kocchar along with the debutant director Ruchika Oberoi, Vikramjit Roy, the Executive producer and Awadhesh Kumar, Head Distribution and Syndication, NFDC were present at the event.
Island City connects three stories, two black comedies and a tragi-comic tale of love showing an ever-changing city in a time of uneasy transition.
The film had its World Premiere at the 72nd Venice Film Festival 2015 in the Venice Days section, where it won the FEDEORA Award for Best Debut Director. The film was selected at 26 International Film Festivals and won top awards at 5 festivals.
Island City is NFDC’s second feature to release this year after Vees Mhanje Vees and Drishyam Films are on board as distribution partners
“The film is inspired by my own experiences in Mumbai- a mix of sad, comic and strange experiences of living in an urban city” says the writer-director Ruchika Oberoi.
While thanking NFDC for their support to the film she added, “Island City has travelled across the world as part of prestigious film festivals and won awards. But for me the greater joy is that the film is releasing back home in India where the film has come from.”
Awadhesh Kumar, Head Distribution and Syndication, says, “Island City is the marquee film for NDFC and this is the second film we are releasing this year. It has been a tremendous journey for NFDC being part of this beautiful film right from the script stage, to production, to film festivals and now NDFC is releasing it theatrically in India. We have great plans to take it forward to all the syndication platforms like digital and TV.”
Vinay Pathak said, “I was pestering Ruchika to cast me in the film because once I read the script I was completely blown away by it”
Revealing about his role in the film Vinay Pathak jokingly complains, “Once again I don’t have a heroine in the film. I have only machines to love in the Island City and a boss who inspires me to have fun”
Tannishtha Chatterjee says, “All the characters are trapped in a machine like life where our relationship is stronger with the virtual world compared to the real world. All the three stories have black humour and people will relate to that.”
Amruta Subhash said, “So far we have seen love stories where a hero and heroine meet and fall in love but my story in Island City is about the kind of love where a lover and the beloved have never met but are still in love.”
The IPL host, Samir Kocchar will be seen in a very different avatar in the film. He plays a dashing hero and a superstar of a popular daily soap. “I have never played anything like this onscreen before and I had a blast doing this film” said Samir
Chandan Roy Sanyal who stars opposite Tannishtha in one of the three stories says, “I play a Gujju lower class slum dweller who loves his bike more than his girlfriend”
Talking about the response to the film at Venice Film Festival he says, “I saw the film in a jam-packed show and the kind of response we received there was overwhelming. The Italian men went nuts after watching the film. I am hoping that we will receive the same kind of response by Indian audiences”
