MAMI presents India Premiere of The Big Sick
The MAMI Year Round Programme in association with MVP Entertainment presented the India Premiere of director Michael Showalter’s The Big Sick in Mumbai.
Actor Anupam Kher and MAMI festival director Anupama Chopra introduced the film to excited members of the year round programme.
The premiere was attended by well-known personalities like Vikramaditya Motwane, Harshvardhan Kapoor, Nina Gupta, Ranvir Shorey, Kirti Kulhari, Tanuja Chandra, Adhiraj Bose, Akshay Roy and Naveen Kasturia.
The Big Sick is an American romantic comedy film directed by Michael Showalter. The story is based on the real-life romance of writer Emily V Gordon (The Carmichael Show) and comedian Kumail Nanjiani, who wrote the script together. It stars Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Adeel Akhtar and Anupam Kher.
The film revolves around Kumail a comic who meets an American graduate student named Emily at one of his stand-up shows. As their relationship blossoms, he soon becomes worried about what his traditional Muslim parents will think of her. When Emily suddenly comes down with an illness that leaves her in a coma, Kumail finds himself developing a bond with her deeply concerned mother and father.
MAMI Creative Director, Smriti Kiran said, “We have a killer line up this month at the MAMI Year Round Programme. The range of films is phenomenal. Last week we screened Netflix’s Okja, this week MVP has given us The Big Sick followed by Sony’s Baby Driver. Apart from screenings, from next month onwards we are doing a soft launch of our workshops. These workshops plus an all India footprint is the next big step for the MAMI year round programme.”

Talking about his experience, Anupam Kher said, “This was my 5th time watching the film and it was the best experience so far.”
The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2017 and was released on June 23, 2017 by Amazon Studios and Lionsgate.
