Late Shamshad Begum

Late Shamshad Begum

Some of the ever green classic songs such as ‘Kajra mohabbat wala’, ‘Mere piya gaye rangoon’, ‘Saiyan dil mein aana re’ that we love even today were sung by her. A nightingale of yesteryears, Shamshad Begum, who had been singing beautiful melodies since 1930’s to 1970’s, is no longer with us as she breathe her last breath on 23 April, 2013 at her residence in Mumbai after prolonged illness. She was 94. “She was not keeping well for past few months and was admitted to the hospital. She passed away last night. The funeral was a solemn affair with a few friends present,” Begum’s daughter Usha told PTI.

Born on 14 April 1919, she made her debut on Peshawar radio in Lahore in 1947, and since then she had sung more than 5000 songs in five different languages with famous music directors composers like S.D Burman, Naushad, O.P Nayyar, Shyam Sunder, Madan Mohan, C. Rama Chandra, Hansaraj Behl, Sardul Kwatra etc.

‘Meri neendon mein tum’ from Naya Andaz, ‘Leke pehla pehla pyaar’ from CID, ‘Aana meri jaan, meri jaan sunday ke sunday’ from Shehnai, ‘Mere piya gaye Rangoon’ from Patanga, ‘Ek Tera Sahara’ from Shama, ‘Naina bhar aye neer’ from Humayun, ‘Jchod Babul Ka Ghar’ from Babul and many more, the list simply goes on.

In 2009, she was conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan and O P Nayyar award for her contribution to Hindi film music.
