Perhaps, that is what metamorphosis needs.” Set against the backdrop of a quaint hilly town, Syaahi is Kya Baat Hai Productions’ latest short film about the coming of age of a young boy. Directed by Varun Tandon, the film won him Special Mention at the 63rd National Film Awards.
Varun Tandon knew that he wanted to be a filmmaker from his first day in St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. He pursued his passion by making 15 short films by the age of 20 to learn the craft, a testimony to his passionate pursuit of self learning the art. Gulcharrey, Varun’s first film after college, premiered at the River To River Film Festival, Italy, and won critical acclaim at numerous international film festivals. It went on to garner over a million views on YouTube and be telecasted nationally by NDTV on two occasions. His first feature length script, Anjaan Gali Gumnaam Nagar, was selected for the NFDC National Script lab. Recently, in addition to Syaahi, Varun worked on Dribbling Dreams, a short documentary about the empowerment of a village through basketball.
Critics called Syaahi, ‘a conglomeration of sense and sensibilities depicted through the innocence of a young mind’. The film went on to win various other accolades at festivals in India and Internationally like Best Live Action Short Film – Flying Elephant Competition, Trivandrum, Best Film Audience Choice – Seattle South Asian film festival, 2016 and more.
